We care about your health and safety — especially for children.
Some slush syrups on the market contain glycerol (E422), which can:
Lower the freezing point (to maintain slushy consistency)
Improve texture and pourability
Retain moisture (acts as a humectant)
While useful, glycerol can pose serious health risks to young children when consumed in excess.
The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has reported several cases of children aged 4–8 becoming seriously ill, with symptoms including:
Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
Lethargy
Loss of consciousness
Hospitalisation
Children under 4 should not be given slush drinks containing glycerol
Retailers should not offer free refills of glycerol-based slush to children under 10
