While safe in small amounts for adults, the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned that glycerol can pose serious health risks to young children, particularly those under 8.

Ingesting high levels of glycerol can cause:

• Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)

• Lethargy

• Loss of consciousness

• Hospitalisation

These effects are more likely in children due to their smaller body weight and higher relative intake.

• Children under 4 should not consume slush drinks containing glycerol.

• Retailers should not offer free refills of glycerol-based slush to children under 10.
